What is it?

Grain is fine random noise on top of a surface. It takes the sterile smoothness out of digital colors and gradients, hides banding in gradients and evokes analog film or paper.

How it works

Pick a color or gradient as the base, adjust amount, grain size and blend mode, and press Space for a new variant. Then export as PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG at the size you need.

FAQ

Which blend mode should I use?
Overlay brightens light areas and darkens dark ones for a punchy grain. Soft light is gentler. Multiply only darkens and suits paper looks and light surfaces.
How do I get a transparent grain texture?
Set the base to Transparent and export as PNG or WebP. The file then holds only the grain, ready to place over images in other apps.
Does the export look the same as the preview?
Yes. Preview and export use the same graphic, and the noise is computed from the seed. The same settings and seed always give the same grain, in every browser.
Does the pattern repeat?
The grain is a seamless 256 pixel tile. With fine grain the repeat is practically invisible, and the file stays small.
