What is it?

Duotone is an image effect that reduces a photo to two colors: dark areas take the shadow color, light areas the highlight color, with a smooth blend in between. With three colors it is called tritone, with any number a gradient map. The look is popular for posters, album covers, social media and websites because it tints photos in brand colors.

How it works

Upload a photo or try the presets on the sample picture. Choose duotone, tritone or gradient and set the shadow and highlight colors. Brightness, contrast and gamma decide how much area each color gets. Grain adds an analog print look, strength blends the original back in. Space rolls new color pairs. Export as PNG, JPG or WebP at full resolution.

FAQ

Is my photo uploaded?
No. The photo is processed in your browser only and never sent to a server. Share links leave the photo out; if you save the design, everything stays local in your browser.
How large can the photo be?
Files up to 5 MB as PNG, JPG or WebP. Photos up to 4096 pixels on the long side keep their full resolution, 12 megapixel pictures included. The design size follows the photo, and the export computes the effect at that size.
What is the difference between duotone, tritone and gradient map?
Duotone gives every brightness a color between two colors, tritone adds a color for the midtones. A gradient map takes any number of colors, spread evenly from dark to light. Colors are blended in the OKLab color space, so the transitions stay clean.
Can I use my brand colors?
Yes. Apply a brand palette from your Brand Kit: Musterli sorts the colors by lightness, the darkest becomes the shadow color and the lightest the highlight color.
Why is there no SVG export?
The effect changes every pixel of the photo, so the result is a raster image. An SVG with a filter would look different from app to app. PNG, JPG and WebP show exactly what you see in the preview.
