What is it?

An Open Graph image is the preview picture that appears when someone shares a link, for example on Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Slack or WhatsApp. Without one, the platform picks some image from the page or shows none at all. A designed image makes your link stand out and get more clicks.

What you can use it for

  • Blog posts

Every post gets its own preview image with its title. In a feed, people see at once what it is about.

  • Product and launch

Share the home page or a new feature with your logo, a label and a striking gradient.

  • Docs and projects

Documentation, open source projects and portfolios look more professional in Slack and on GitHub too.

How it works

Enter the title, label, subtitle and site name, and upload your logo if you like. Choose a layout and a motif or your own picture as the background. Download the image as PNG or JPG, put it on your website and copy the meta tags into the head of the page.

Tips

  • Keep the title short, about six to ten words. On phones the image is shown small.
  • Keep important content away from the edges. Some platforms crop the image slightly.
  • Use “Reuse” in another Musterli tool to take its picture straight in as the background.

FAQ

What size does an Open Graph image need?
The usual size is 1200 × 630 pixels, about 1.91:1. It is the default here and displays well on Facebook, LinkedIn, X and most chat apps.
How do I add the image to my website?
Upload the image to your server and copy the meta tags into the head of the page. Replace the example address with the full address of your image, including https and the domain.
Why does a platform still show the old image?
Platforms cache previews. Facebook's Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn's Post Inspector reload the preview. A new file name helps as well.
Are my logo and picture uploaded?
No. Everything is made in your browser. Your logo and picture stay on your device and are left out of share links.
