What is it?

An avatar generator creates profile pictures without a photo: initials on a colored shape, a symmetric identicon or a small composition of shapes. Use them as default avatars for user accounts, in comments, team pages, chats and prototypes. Color and pattern are derived from the name, so every person always looks the same.

How it works

Type a name or an email address and choose initials, identicon or shapes. Set the shape, the fill (solid, gradient or pattern), the font and the grid, and pick a palette each name takes its color from. The space bar shuffles palette, fill and font while the name stays. Export as SVG, PNG, JPG or WebP, for example at 128, 256, 512 or 1024 pixels.

FAQ

Does the same name always get the same avatar?
Yes. Color, identicon and shapes come from a hash of the name, not from chance. Upper and lower case and surrounding spaces do not matter. Only the palette and your other settings change the result.
Which fonts are used?
Only the system fonts of your device (sans, serif, mono or rounded). No font files are loaded or embedded, so the lettering can look slightly different on another operating system. For a fixed look, export PNG, JPG or WebP.
What is an identicon?
An identicon is a small, symmetric pixel pattern computed from a piece of text. It tells accounts apart without anyone uploading a picture. Here you choose the grid, the cell shape and the gap.
Is the name stored anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. The name is only part of a share link if you create one, and of the design if you save it locally.
Can I create many avatars at once?
Each export holds one avatar. Enter the names one after another: since color and pattern follow from the name, every person keeps the same look when you add more avatars later.
