What is it?

Contour lines connect points of equal height, just like on a hiking map. Musterli creates a random terrain from noise and draws its contours at even intervals. The result works as a calm background for websites, slides, posters or packaging and stays sharp as SVG.

How it works

Shape the terrain with scale, detail levels, roughness and warp, and choose how many lines to draw. Show lines, filled elevation bands or both, and highlight every nth line as an index line. Press the space bar for a new terrain. Export as SVG, PNG, JPG, WebP or as a GIF in which the lines slowly move.

FAQ

Are the contour lines real map data?
No. The terrain comes from mathematical noise and is entirely made up. That means you can use the graphic without licensing questions, and every seed gives you a new landscape.
How large is the SVG file?
With the default settings usually between 100 and 400 KB. Musterli simplifies the lines and rounds coordinates. Many lines, many detail levels and bands with lines make the file larger, but it always stays below about 1.5 MB.
What does warp do?
It shifts the terrain through itself with a second layer of noise. Small values make the shapes more organic, large values give flowing patterns reminiscent of marble or wood grain.
Can I use my brand colors?
Yes. With a brand palette from your Brand Kit the tool takes your colors for the lines or bands and picks the darkest color for the lines on top of the bands.
