What is it?

Caustics are the bright, wobbly light lines you see on the floor of a swimming pool. They form where curved water focuses sunlight. Musterli recreates them with moving Voronoi cells (a pattern that splits the area into cells around scattered points). The same technique also gives organic cells and faceted crystal surfaces, all computed live in your browser.

What you can use it for

  • Summer and travel campaigns

A moving pool background instantly says holiday. Use it for hotels, swimwear or summer sales, live on the site or as a story.

  • Science and health

The Cells style looks like a microscope image and suits biotech, labs and health topics.

  • Glass and jewellery looks

Crystal and stained glass give faceted, gem-like surfaces for packaging, posters and cards.

How it works

Pick a style: Caustics for pool light, Cells for organic shapes, or Crystal for facets. Set the cell size, irregularity and warp, then line width and contrast for the look of the edges. Choose two to six colors, from the deep tone to the brightest light. Press Space for a new variant. Export PNG, JPG or WebP up to 8K, a seamless GIF loop, or live code for your website.

Tips

  • A thin line width with high contrast gives sharp light lines; a wide line width gives soft, glowing water.
  • Put the darkest color first and the brightest last: the light lines always take the last color.
  • Low speed feels like calm water, high speed like a busy pool.

FAQ

Does the pattern repeat?
No. The cells come from seeded noise and never form a visible tile. Every seed gives a new, unique arrangement.
Can I use the caustics as an animated website background?
Yes. In the export dialog, choose Web Component, React component or HTML embed. The water moves live, pauses off screen and stands still for people who prefer reduced motion.
What are Voronoi cells?
Scatter points over an area and give every spot to its nearest point: you get cells like soap bubbles or giraffe spots. The borders between those cells become the light lines of the caustics.
Does the export look exactly like the preview?
Yes. Preview and export run the same shader with the same values, and large exports up to 8K are rendered in tiles without seams.
